Pier55

This is a Pier55. It was designed by Heatherwick Studio and Thomas Heatherwick and made for (as the client) Hudson River Park Trust. It is dated 2014–2018 (anticipated completion date).

How do you build a public park and performance space that is suspended above water?
Pier55 extends into the Hudson River on Manhattan’s West Side. Inspired by wooden piles peppering the water,　the competition-winning design inserts concrete columns to support an undulating green landscape featuring indigenous plants and an open-air amphitheater. The square-shaped topography—both public park and world-class performance space—is positioned perpendicular to the city’s grid in dynamic relationship with the riverside walkway and surrounding streets. The project is scheduled for completion in 2018.
