UK Pavilion, 2007–2010

This is a UK Pavilion. It was designed by Heatherwick Studio and Thomas Heatherwick and made for (as the client) Foreign & Commonwealth Office of the Government of the United Kingdom. It is dated 2007–2010. Its medium is acrylic rods, seeds, plywood, aluminum, rubber, fiber optics, artificial turf.

How can a building represent a nation?
For the 2010 World Expo, in Shanghai, the studio conceived a single stunning structure that reflected Britain’s history of parks with an exhibit from the Millennium Seed Bank at London’s Kew Gardens.Known as the "Seed Cathedral," 66,000 acrylic rods extended from its surfaces. Outside, the rods formed a shimmering dandelion-like surface. Inside, the rods’ tips displayed the collection of 250,000 seeds. The rods channeled sunlight, and contained tiny fiber-optic lights to illuminate the pavilion by night. A surrounding, sloping landscape provided an oasis of play and calm amid the bustle. The pavilion received the Expo’s top prize.
