Bracket, GE's Jet Engine Bracket Challenge Winner, 2013

This object is not part of the Cooper Hewitt's permanent collection. It was able to spend time at the museum on loan from General Electric Company as part of Beautiful Users.

In 2013, GE and GrabCAD launched the 3D Printing Design Quest, a competition to redesign a jet engine bracket. (The bracket attaches to the outside of an engine and supports its weight.) Participants from 56 countries submitted nearly 700 designs. Ten finalists underwent rigorous testing at GE’s Global Research Center in Niskayuna, New York. The winning design decreased the weight of the bracket by nearly 84% while preserving its mechanical integrity.
