Glassring Ring, 1986

This is a Ring. It was designed by Herman Hermsen. It is dated 1986 and we acquired it in 2016. Its medium is silver, glass. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

This unusual ring came about through Hermsen’s desire to use gems as structural elements rather than mere decoration. The ring has a T-shaped post that fits between and below the fingers. Without the large faceted glass “gem” the form would not be wearable.

This object was donated by Susan Lewin. It is credited The Susan Grant Lewin Collection, Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.
