Gatefold LP Packaging, Jean-Jacques Perrey & Luke Vibert present: Moog Acid
This is a Gatefold LP Packaging. It was designed by Non-Format and photographed by Dan McPharlin and made for (as the client) Lo Recordings. It is dated 2007 and we acquired it in 2012. Its medium is offset lithography on paper with vinyl record. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.
As part of their design practice, Non-Format often works with visual artists to produce integral content for their music packaging. In the case of Moog Acid, Kjell Ekhorn and Jon Forss enlisted Dan McPharlin to create miniature models of obsolete music production equipment out of cardboard. Non-Format integrated McPharlin’s photographs of these models into their gatefolded LP packaging design, with the images featured on the cover and interior. Non-Format’s design relies on a straightforward aesthetic of black text on a white background to underscore their custom-designed typography. The text forms of each letter morph from razor-thin lines to swelling curves, a balance of extremes that is devoid of terminating points—a graphic nod to the cyclical nature of the outdated music forms resurrected in McPharlian’s fragile miniatures of patch synths and reel-to-reel tape players and the LP format of the recording contained within.
This work is part of a larger gift proposed for acquisition from Non-Format. The gift in its entirety would offer an overview of the firm’s work from 2006 to 2010, allowing the museum to showcase their evolving practice.
