This is a No. 11. It was designed by Hans Tan.
This object is not part of the Cooper Hewitt's permanent collection. It was able to spend time at the museum on loan from Hans Tan as part of Beauty—Cooper Hewitt Design Triennial.
Tan’s Striped Ming series uses the same batik-inspired technique found in his Spotted Nyonya pieces—masking some portions of traditionally decorated porcelain surfaces, and carefully sandblasting the unmasked areas to reveal the delicate white porcelain below. Unlike the ordered patterns of the spotted series, the stripes are placed randomly, creating a more active surface. Here, the vessel’s handle remains in its original state, leaving a glimpse of this object’s history.
