Pair of Cake Tongs With Caterpillar Tongs

This is a tongs. It was manufactured by C. V. Gibert. It is dated ca. 1890 and we acquired it in 1996. Its medium is silver. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

text from the introduction to "Feeding Desire":

"Some great works acquired since the Metzenberg gift are two French naturalistic sets, one from about 1890 by C.V. Gilbert (fig.5) and the other by Claude LaLanne of 1966 (Fig. 6)

It is credited Museum purchase from Smithsonian Institution Collections Acquisition Program, Decorative Arts Association Acquisition, and Sarah Cooper-Hewitt Funds.

Its dimensions are

L x W x D ((a and b, assembled and closed)): 26.3 × 6 × 4.7 cm (10 3/8 × 2 3/8 × 1 7/8 in.) L x W x D ((a) tong): 25.9 × 4.1 × 3.1 cm (10 3/16 × 1 5/8 × 1 1/4 in.) L x W x D ((b) tong): 26.3 × 4.7 × 3.2 cm (10 3/8 × 1 7/8 × 1 1/4 in.)

It has the following markings

On reverse of neck of both a,b, stamped: [1] illegible mark (possibly boar head mark indicating .800 fineness) [2] other possible illegible marks present
