Chinese porcelain, imported by the Dutch East India Company starting in the seventeenth century, was widely sought after by wealthy Europeans looking to add an exotic touch to their interiors. Delft, in Holland, was an important pottery center for the production of imitation blue-and-white Chinese porcelain. This birdcage with traditional Dutch landscapes along the bottom panels incorporates this popular Eastern aesthetic.

This object was donated by Eleanor Garnier Hewitt and Sarah Cooper Hewitt. It is credited Gift of Eleanor and Sarah Hewitt.
