This is a book illustration. It was designed by Eugène Jean Baptiste Plasky and published by Lyon-Claesen. It is dated 19th century. Its medium is lithograph. It is a part of the Smithsonian Libraries department.

This whimsical, loosely-drawn watercolor design is for a fringe that could be used as a decorative trimming for upholstered furniture, draperies, pillows, or any kind of household furnishing. These types of decorative textile trimmings are also known in French as passementerie. The late 19th century saw a boom in the consumption of decorative textiles and passementerie in both Europe and the United States, and played a prominent role in the furnishings of interiors for upper and middle class homes. They were often used to restrain window drapes and bed hangings.
