Grid is an exploration of color by Dutch designers, Scholten & Baijings, who used an arrangement of parallel and perpendicular lines to create overlapping transparent layers and densities. Developed at the same time as another design by Scholten & Baijings, Blocks, Grid is also an upholstery fabric and can be combined with Blocks in multiple ways. Grid also has a long repeat—over twenty-seven feet—and Carole Baijings explained this idea: “In a Mondrian painting, the composition fits perfectly within the parameters of the canvas. Making a composition for an upholstery fabric calls for an entirely different approach. We opted for an unusually long repeat so that we can create individual differences within one product family.”
