Superleggera Chair
This is a chair. It was manufactured by Cassina S.p.A. It is dated 1957 and we acquired it in 2013. Its medium is turned, planed and joined ash, twill-woven cane. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.
For years, Gio Ponti strove to create the lightest possible chair that could be manufactured with the craft and distinction of the best Italian manufacturers. Inspired by 19th-century Italian ladderback chairs with woven straw seats, the Superleggera is the culmination of that effort—planed ash, shaped into a slender frame with triangular legs that are expertly joined, with a hand-woven cane seat. The total weight of this sleek and simple chair is only 3.10 pounds.
