This is a brooch. It was designed by Gijs Bakker and made by Tobias van Roojen. It is dated 1988 and we acquired it in 2016. Its medium is gold, acquamarine, pvc-laminated newspaper. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.
Gijs Bakker’s Blinker brooch satirizes the continuing worship of athletes by transforming a newspaper image of the superstar Dutch striker Regi Blinker into jewelry. To add an exclamation point, he links the outsize celebrity to money by overlaying the soccer ball with an aquamarine gemstone.
