Leaf Dish
This is a dish. It was designed by Tapio Wirkkala and produced by Soinne et Kni. It is dated ca. 1951 and we acquired it in 2016. Its medium is laminated birch and teak plywood. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.
Tapio Wirkkala was a major figure of post-war design and although much of his output (and perhaps his most famous design, the Finlandia Vodka bottle) was in glass, ceramic, and plastic, he began his career as a sculptor, using a traditional Finnish carving knife. The success of Wirkkala’s designs at the Milan Triennale of 1951 established him as a major figure in modern Scandinavian design. The Leaf Platter dates from that year.
In the late 1940s, Wirkkala began working with plywood, a material in which he could recreate natural forms and rhythms, as seen in the Leaf Platter. The Leaf Platter represents a strong example of the boundary between sculpture and decorative arts that Wirkkala straddled. The platter's rounded organic shape uses the grain of the wood to represent the veins of the leaf, presented in concentric circles.
