Drawing, Arthur Ross Terrace and Garden, Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, New York, NY: Aerial view of Central Park, Fifth Avenue and Garden, 2012

This is a Drawing. It was designed by Walter Hood and Hood Design. It is dated 2012 and we acquired it in 2020. Its medium is watercolor and charcoal on white wove paper; verso: watercolor and charcoal. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.

Landscape architect Walter Hood was commissioned by Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum to re-design the garden of the Carnegie Mansion. Hood drew inspiration from the garden’s close proximity to Central Park and the historic nature of the mansion (including Richard Schermerhorn, Jr.’s unbuilt 1901 design plans for the garden) to create a contemporary verdant setting for all to enjoy. Hood worked with RAFT Landscape Architecture to design new pavers for the Arthur Ross Terrace and Garden, and conceived of new plantings and a reimagined rock garden (rockery) to provide a new landscape experience for the museum. These atmospheric watercolor and charcoal drawings from Hood’s sketchbook illustrate the early considerations and inspirations of the proximity of Central Park. They include elements that were considered but abandoned in the final design, such as a vertical garden and a water element. All of the drawings demonstrate the ways in which Hood incorporated the historic elements of the site. In Hood’s final design, a range of color and texture provides seasonal interest.

This object was donated by Walter Hood. It is credited Gift of Walter Hood.
