CD Packaging, Vowels - The Pattern Prism, 2009
This is a CD packaging. It was designed by Non-Format and illustrated by Dylan Martorell and fabricated by Elisabeth Edlbauer and photographed by Donald Christie and made for (as the client) Lo Recordings. It is dated 2009 and we acquired it in 2012. Its medium is offset lithograph, insert printed in white, black, and green on paper with plastic jewel case. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.
For the packaging of the Vowels’ album, The Pattern Prism, Non-Format experimented with transforming abstract shapes into letterforms. The design’s balance of extremes is the hallmark of Non-Format’s work: heavy shapes contrast with delicate lines, curvy script counters rigid forms, and bright white type pops against a dark background. The CD itself features a repeating pattern of interlocking geometric forms in white against a black background, echoing the album’s cover.
Non-Format frequently collaborates with artists on music packaging designs, and The Pattern Prism is an example of this practice: Dylan Martorell designed the costumes and aided with the illustration, Elisabeth Edlbauer tailored the costumes, and Donald Christie oversaw photography.
