This is a Drawing. It was designed by John De Cesare. It is dated March 18, 1957 and we acquired it in 1982. Its medium is color pencil, graphite on cream wove paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.
This study contains two translations of eight measures of the "U.S. Army Bugle Call: Taps," an arrangement in G#, with words by Penn Military College. The top score is drawn to the same scale as the musical score (that is, it was written in 4/4 time; therefore, the size of the notes reflects that time signature--see Study 146#2A). The lower score is one-half the size of the musical score as written.
Below the translations the artist has reduced his score to a simple outline form, which he used as the basis for decorative design motifs. For instance, in this drawing the outline that surrounds all the score translations as well as the designs in the upper corners and on either side of the lower scores are made up of various sections of the final translation at the bottom of the drawing.
