Dado (France)
This is a Dado. It is dated 1820–30 and we acquired it in 2007. Its medium is block-printed on handmade paper. It is a part of the Wallcoverings department.
This dado is nearly 15 feet long and has never been used. The design contains strong neoclassical motifs including caryatids and affronted griffons on a simulated stone ground. Because of the heavy ornament and the bold terracotta and green coloring, it is in the late Empire or Restoration style.
The museum already holds one example of this piece. Because this is such a rare and beautiful wallcovering, and because works on paper can only be shown on a limited basis, having a duplicate of this significance is strongly recommended for acquisition.
