Bobbinet (England)
This is a Bobbinet. It was manufactured by SwissTulle U.K. PLC. It is dated designed 2000, manufactured 2004 and we acquired it in 2005. Its medium is nylon and its technique is silver-coated bobbinet. It is a part of the Textiles department.
This bobbinet is used as a radar decoy that mimics the shape signature of the warship carrying it. When the decoy is “fired” in the direction of a missile attack, the missile locks onto the bobbinet as the correct radar signature rather than onto the ship. The bobbinet is radar reflective, provides electromagnetic shielding, and has conductive properties.
The silver-coated bobbinet, made of gray tulle, has a fabric construction in which the weft yarn is looped diagonally around the vertical warp yarn to form a clearly defined and exceptionally stable hexagonal mesh. The overall structure, traditionally used in garments and accessories, is very lightweight, strong, and sheer. The bobbinet was first designed in 2000 and was manufactured by SwissTulle UK PLC in 2004.
