King O'Dell Plate
This is a plate. It was designed by Walter Dorwin Teague and manufactured by Taylor, Smith and Taylor. It is dated 1952 and we acquired it in 2002. Its medium is glazed porcelain, transfer printed decoration. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.
This plate is from a set designed by Walter Dorwin Teague called Conversation, made by the American pottery firm Taylor, Smith & Taylor. It has printed ornamentation in the King O’Dell pattern showing a jack-in-the-pulpit flower. Conversation was introduced in 1952 and proved a popular seller in the 1950s. Some Conversation pieces had plain pastel glazes while others were decorated with decals of floral motifs.
The plate is a welcome addition to the museum’s collection of American mid-century tablewares, and will also expand our holdings of works by Walter Dorwin Teague, which include table glass, car models, and the Kodak Brownie camera.
It is credited Gift of The Lake St. Louis Historical Society.
