Hanging (France)

This is a Hanging. It was made by Maison Mathevon et Bouvard. It is dated 1850–1875 and we acquired it in 1997. Its medium is silk and its technique is lampas - 7&1 satin weave supplemented by a 1s2 twill weave (interlaced connection a 2s1 twill). there are two continuous wefts in each shed of the twill -yellow for the background, red to create the effect of damask. all other colors are brocaded. It is a part of the Textiles department.

It is credited Museum Purchase from Smithsonian Institution Collections Acquisition Program Fund.
