Textile, Bassett's Licorice Allsorts
This is a Textile. We acquired it in 1992. Its medium is rayon and its technique is printed by engraved roller on plain weave. It is a part of the Textiles department.
Bassetts’s Licorice Allsorts are a quintessentially English sweet. This fabric was commissioned by the company, and distributed to shops which sold Bassetts’ candies. The donor, textile designer Eddie Squire, purchased it "from an ancient sweet shop in Haringay." A 1932 version without the Bassett’s logo has been re-printed many times over the decades, suggesting that the design resonated far beyond the candy industry and into the popular culture.
This object was donated by Eddie Squires.
