Pitcher (USA), ca. 1893–1909

This is a Pitcher. It was company: Biloxi Art Pottery and ceramist: George E. Ohr. It is dated ca. 1893–1909 and we acquired it in 1984. Its medium is glazed earthenware. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

Though adamantly independent, Ohr, the self-titled “mad potter of Biloxi,” created ceramics in tune with the nature-inspired Art Nouveau style. This pitcher, focused more on form than function, translates the classic shape of a wheel-thrown pitcher into a more organic, expressive vessel thanks to its slumped sides and earth-toned palette.

This object was donated by Marcia Goodman and William Goodman. It is credited Gift of Marcia and William Goodman.
