Drawing, Design for the West Wall of the Music Room, for Brighton Pavilion, Brighton, England
This is a Drawing. It was designed by Frederick Crace. We acquired it in 1948. Its medium is brush and watercolor, gouache over traces of graphite on white wove paper . It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.
Crace designed fantastical interiors for the Brighton Pavilion. In this presentation drawing for the music room, Crace’s paintings of pseudo-Chinese landscapes imitate the decoration on imported Chinese red-lacquer boxes. The drawing presents two variations (one is under the overleaf drawing) of the painted-glass windows, backlit to produce an opalescent glow.
