Peacock Side Chair

This is a Side Chair. It was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and made for (as the client) Imperial Hotel. It is dated 1921–22 and we acquired it in 1968. Its medium is oak, leatherette upholstery. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

Wright’s 1913–23 designs for The Imperial Hotel in Tokyo included the décor and furnishings. Used in the hotel’s Peacock banquet room, this chair’s hexagonal back and square seat echoed the building’s Mayan Revival exterior but Japanese design also had a profound influence on Wright’s work.

This object was donated by Tetsuzo Inumaru. It is credited Gift of Tetsuzo Inumaru.
