Box, 19th century
This is a Box. It is dated 19th century and we acquired it in 1966. Its medium is molded and carved tortoiseshell inlaid with silver and mother of pearl. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.
This oval tortoiseshell box features inlaid scenes of workshops on top and underside. The scenes are likely derived from a print source. Artisans are shown heating and bending what appears to be horn and flattening it with a large screw press.
