Drawing, Design for a Motif with Hand and Drafting Triangle
This is a Drawing. It was designed by Edward McKnight Kauffer. It is dated 1935–1938 and we acquired it in 1963. Its medium is brush and gouache, graphite on thick paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.
Edward McKnight Kauffer was an American designer who moved to London just before World War I and stayed until the advent of World War II. Inspired by cubist painting and collage, Kauffer often combined illustration with halftone reproductions of photographic elements—traditional lithography was his preferred means of reproduction. Cooper Hewitt’s extensive collection of Kauffer’s drawings and designs illuminates his process.
