The cottage and tree fill the left half of the page; the right half is mostly empty sky. The cottage has a slanted, thatched roof and irregular shape. Two figures stand near the dark, open doorway. To the right is a low mound of thatch or hay; to the left, the large gnarled tree spreads its shady branches over the cottage. Low plants grow along the water's edge, with a large tub turned on its side; a short dock stretches into the water. In the right corner, a bird sits on a the bare tip of narrow bank, the rest of the bank thickly crowded with plants. The flat landscape stretches back into the distance; a small building and windmill rise along the horizon. The linework of the print is precise, minutely detailed in the foreground and looser in the background. The various textures are suggested by the lines: short hatches and crosshatches for the thatch, squiggled lines for the plants, long wavy lines for the water.
