Sidewall (France), 1880–1900

This is a Sidewall. It is dated 1880–1900 and we acquired it in 1952. Its medium is machine printed on paper. It is a part of the Wallcoverings department.

This children’s wallpaper contains a dense assemblage of all manner of toys from musical instruments to crackers, dolls to watercolor paints, stuffed animals to shuttlecocks. While this great array of toys might seem a child’s dream come true, the minimal voids in the pattern could also be a little intimidating.

It is credited Gift of Martin Battersby.

Its dimensions are

73 x 50.5 cm (28 3/4 x 19 7/8 in.)
