Dutch jewelry designer Lucy Sarneel was born in 1961. She graduated from Stadsacademie in Maastricht in 1985 and went on to study and train at Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam, graduating in 1989. Her jewelry work combines elements of her home, in the use of zinc (with a color reminiscent of the country’s sea and sky), and aspects of her travels. She has been particularly inspired by Austrailan Aboriginal arts and the art and culture of Mexico.
She returned to her alma mater, Gerrit Rietveld Academie, to teach as the head of the jewelry department. Sarneel was the 2002 recipient of the Marzee Prize and the 2006 recipient of the Gallery Funaki International Jewellery Award, awarded from Melbourne, Australia, among many other honors and recognitions. She continues to create jewelry, working in a medium that she believes allows for the “intimacy and… protection of the things we believe in or cherish.” [1]
