Halima Aden (born September 19, 1997) is a Somali American humanitarian and former fashion model. Born in a refugee camp in Kenya, she moved with her family to St. Cloud, Minnesota at the age of six. Aden was a good student and with the support of her teachers, she overcame the racism that accompanied her adoption of the hijab. The potential to earn college scholarship money encouraged her to enter the Miss Minnesota USA pageant where she was the first to wear a hijab and burkini in that state’s competition.
