William Thomas Beckford was an English novelist, connoisseur, collector, and patron of the arts, as well as a critic, travel writer, and sometime politician. His best-known work is the Gothic novel ‘Vathek’ (1786). He was reputed at one stage of his life to be the richest commoner in England.
