Phil Patton was an influential design journalist, author, curator, and teacher. Raised in Durham, North Carolina, Patton graduated with a degree in English and History from Harvard University where he was the arts editor of the student newspaper The Crimson. He went on to graduate study in comparative literature at Columbia University. Patton’s first jobs included fact-checking at Esquire magazine and editing Delta’s in-flight magazine. His primary areas of interest and expertise were car design, industrial design, and technology. He taught in the Design Criticism program at the School of Visual Arts and the Columbia School of Journalism in New York. Patton contributed to many magazines, including Art in America, Architectural Digest and Wired. He also wrote for the New York Times’s Home and Automobile sections. His books include Open Road: A Celebration of The American Highway and Michael Graves Designs: The Art of the Everyday Object.
