Founded in 2016, Finland-based Sulapac Ltd. was created by two biochemical researchers specializing in biomaterials, Suvi Haimi and Laura Kyllönen, from the University of Tampere. While Haimi was supervising Kyllönen's doctoral thesis, they became concerned with the excess of solid waste, particularly petroleum-based plastics, affecting the environment. As a result, they decided to become entrepreneurs, creating their company "with a mission to save the planet from plastic waste." They developed and patented Sulapac,a sustainable, biodegradable material derived from FSC-certified wood mixed with natural binders. The material can be molded, and is colored with natural dyes that do no environmental harm. Sulapac Ltd. colaborates with manufacturers to develop sustainable, economical, appealing packaging. Although a young company, Sulapac has already received several awards, including the Green Award from LUXE PACK (2017), and the Green Alley Award (2017).
