Anna Hyatt became interested in animals at an early age, due to her father’s position at Harvard University and MIT, where he taught paleontology and zoology. She studied art at the Arts League of New York and did extensive studies from nature. Hyatt married Archer Milton Huntington, stepson to wealthy industrialist Collis P. Huntington. In 1932, Hyatt became the first female artist to be selected member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
As one of the most celebrated American sculptors of the 20th century, Hyatt was commissioned to create works all over the world. Her most celebrated statue is the Jean d’Arc equestrian on Riverside Dr. overlooking the Hudson River in New York City. She received several awards throughout her long life. Hyatt and her husband were great philanthropists and benefactors to the arts.
