Cooper Hewitt says...
Clarence House was founded in 1961 by the New York interior designer Robin Roberts on the premise that design integrity could be achieved through artistry and technical quality. Roberts believed there was a lack of options for home furnishings textiles in the American market so began by importing fabrics from Europe that has not yet been seen in America. Eventually Clarence House developed into its own textile design studio with an in-house art director, Kazumi Yoshida. Yoshida provided the company with connections to a vast network of European mills and textile archives and he continues to control the evolution of the company’s designs today.
Through the years, Clarence House has supplied the furnishing fabrics for pre-eminent museums and historic houses. The company has continuously been featured in important design and architectural magazines. They have become famous for their hand-screen printed fabrics and wallpapers and their hand-loomed brocades as well as for velvets, damasks, silks, cottons, linens, sheers, trimmings, and leather.
Clarence House is located in New York City at the D & D Building. They maintain sixteen showrooms in regional American design centers and a sales team that services areas beyond these city centers. They also have an array of International showrooms open to interior decorators, architects, and designers.
