Graphic artist, architect, designer. Along with Richard Riemerschmid, the first industrial designer. Member of the avant-garde group associated with the Munich Secession, 1893, founded Vereinigte Werkstätten für Kunst im Handwerk in 1897 with Hermann Obrist, Bruno Paul, Bernhard Pankok, and Richard Riemerschmid. Lived and worked in the Darmstadt artists colony. Director of Kunstgewerbeshule 1904-1907. Architect and designer for AEG, 1906-. Founded Deutscher Werkbund with Hermann Muthesius and others, 1907.
