Synapse was founded by four engineers in Seattle in 2002 as a company dedicated to “solving difficult engineering challenges.” In 2005, they began to develop software. In its fifteen year history, Synapse’s scope has gradually widened as they tackle a variety of engineering issues—from the development of new products to mapping user experiences. Bloomberg highlights the variety of work the company does, noting their involvement with “strategic planning, architecture development, proof of concept, product prototyping, manufacturing readiness, critical design solution, and applied research…program management, electrical engineering, RF engineering, mechanical engineering, systems engineering, firmware engineering, mobile and desktop application development, enterprise software engineering, software quality assurance, UX/UI design, industrial design, manufacturing operations, and strategy consulting services.” Though their work is expansive and wide reaching, it is rooted in product development for a wide range of technologies. Examples of their work includes the early development of GPS devices incorporating live traffic updates, Samsung headphones, and “smart eyewear” for athletes. Their physical presence has widened as well, with offices in Hong Kong and San Francisco. In 2016 they were acquired by Cambridge Consultants Company.
