The Industrial Development Engineering Associates (I.D.E.A.) was a consulting firm in Indianapolis founded in 1945 by two former RCA engineers Joe Weaver and John Pies. The company incorporated in 1947. A TV signal booster was the company’s first profitable product. A number of divisions were introduced in the mid-1950s: the Monitoradio Division, which built emergency frequency band receivers; the Regency Division, best known for the TI-1, the first transistor radio; and The Radell Division, the resistor manufacturing group, which was sold and transferred to Texas Instruments, Inc. in 1955. In 1961 the parent company name officially changed to Regency Electronics, Inc. In 1981 Regency became Relm Communications Inc. and the company is currently operating as RELM Wireless Corporation.
