Industrial designer John H. Walters began his career in 1935 at Ford Motor Company. Walters was one of the first designers hired by Edsel Ford to work with Bob Gregorie in Ford’s new Design Department. Gregorie’s design process required that Ford designers specialize in the design of specific elements for use in all vehicles. Walters designed steering wheels and instrument panels for Ford cars and trucks until 1941, when he left to begin his own industrial design business. As an independent industrial designer, Walters designed for Whirlpool and other appliance manufacturers. Later in his career, Walters worked for automotive designer Bill Schmidt.
