Ensemble With Brittannia Headpiece, from Fall / Winter 2015 Ready-to-Wear collection
This is a Ensemble with Brittannia headpiece. It was designed by Gareth Pugh.
This object is not part of the Cooper Hewitt's permanent collection. It was able to spend time at the museum on loan from Gareth Pugh as part of Beauty—Cooper Hewitt Design Triennial.
Pugh incorporates unconventional materials into his structured silhouettes in this ensemble from his 2015 Fall / Winter collection. Plastic drinking straws mingle with silk chiffon, patent and stretch leather, viscose, and felted wool. The drinking straws provide an unexpected contrast in texture and movement to the materials we are used to seeing on the runway. The thin, exaggerated vertical presence of the Brittania headpiece stands in contrast to the outfit it is shown with, creating an image that is both dark and whimsical.
It is credited Courtesy of Gareth Pugh.
