Paper Construction, Aladdin, or, the Wonderful Lamp; Centerfold

The McLoughlin Brothers retell the story of Aladdin in this pantomime book. This New York publishing firm pioneered color printing technology for children’s books and published a range of items including chapbooks, large folio picture books, puzzles, board games and some of America’s earliest pop-up books. Early McLoughlin Bros. work is characterized by being bright and hand-colored. At the center of the text is a double-leaf chromolithographed centerfold showing a stage-like setting with musicians. Within the proscenium of the stage is a series of smaller leaves of plates in varying sizes that in turning, illustrate the action of the story. When a pantomime book is opened at any page, the whole presents the appearance of a stage in a strikingly realistic manner.
