Book Illustration, Art Anatomy, Pectoralis Major in Use
This is a book illustration. It was created by William Rimmer and published by Houghton, Mifflin and Company. It is dated 1884. Its medium is graphite drawing on paper. It is a part of the Smithsonian Libraries department.
Art Anatomy by artist William Rimmer, originally published in 1877, is one of the key publications on anatomical drawing instruction of the 19th century. Rimmer, born in Liverpool, England, in 1816, immigrated to the United States in 1826, settling in New England where he studied medicine. Using his knowledge of the structure and form of the human body, he later created figures in his portrait busts and monumental religious and historic paintings that are clear, strong and anatomically correct. Rimmer, who was director of the Cooper Union School of Design for Women in New York City from 1866 to 1870, was also an enthusiastic, detailed, and renowned drawing instructor. Art Anatomy, funded by one of his drawing students, includes nearly 900 red chalk illustrations depicting human structure, movement, and expression.
