Hot Bed Brooch And Case

This is a Brooch and Case. It was designed by Kiff Slemmons and made by Bruce Metcalf. We acquired it in 2016. Its medium is silver, carved wood fragment, coral (brooch); handmade paper (box). It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

This brooch is part of a series in which Slemmons “repaired” or finished the incomplete work of other jewelers whose work she admired. Here, Slemmons placed Bruce Metcalf’s carved emaciated and faceless figure on a silver nest with coral flames to evoke “a hotbed of ideas.”

This object was donated by Susan Lewin.
