This is a Jar. It was ceramist: Enclides Fonesca. It is dated 1939. Its medium is earthenware. It is a part of the Exhibitions department.
The incised geometric motifs on this jar by Fonseca were inspired by the Marajoara, a prolific ancient civilization that thrived between 400 and 1300 CE on the Marajó Island of the Amazon basin. The excavation of the site in the 1870s was a major influence on Brazilian artists and designers of the art deco and modern periods.
