Mask, Ýrúrarí

This is a Mask. It was designed by Ýrúrarí, Ýr Jóhannsdóttir (Icelandic, b. 1992).

This object is not part of the Cooper Hewitt's permanent collection. It was able to spend time at the museum on loan from Blue: The Tatter Textile Library as part of Design and Healing: Creative Responses to Epidemics.

It is dated 2020. Its medium is handknit, mixed recycled wool. It is a part of the Exhibitions department.


Icelandic textile artist Ýrúrarí creates humorous knitted garments using recycled materials. In spring 2020, she knitted sculptural masks as a playful way to cope with isolation during lockdown. Her masks celebrate the ability of craft and design to bolster mental and physical health. They are not intended to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
