Hanging, Four Seasons
This is a Hanging. It was designed by Luba Krejci and made by Luba Krejci. It is dated 1964 and we acquired it in 1982. Its medium is linen and its technique is bobbin lace using discontinuous tape technique. It is a part of the Textiles department.
Lace-making was a tradition in Luba Krejci’s native Czechoslovakia, but enthusiasm for the craft waned in the twentieth century. Krejci sought to reverse this trend by creating fresh lace designs, like this one, for others to produce. She intended to revitalize the disappearing art form by inspiring new interest in it.
Krejci gained international recognition when she was awarded a gold medal at the 1960 Triennale in Milan for her large-scale lace constructions. This forty-inch diameter lace is worked in traditional bobbin lace techniques, but on a large scale and with folk-art inspired figures that are anything but traditional.
This object was featured in our Object of the Week series in a post titled One Artist's Range From Traditional to Abstract.
