Drawing, Study 42, Arched Ceiling, General Foods Theme
This is a Drawing. It was designed by John De Cesare. It is dated September 8, 1950 and we acquired it in 1982. Its medium is color pencil, graphite on pink wove paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.
Among John De Cesare's early drawings are studies for the decoration of a General Foods building. They were, like all the drawings in the exhibition, privately motivated projects. There was no commission or official connection with General Foods. His experience as an architectural sculptor is evident in the Art Deco style of the drawings and in his attempt to create a direct and meaningful relationship between the function or purpose of a building and the form and content of its decorative motifs. His source of inspiration was the 1949 General Foods Annual Report: A Portrait of Progress 1929-1949.
In this study for an arched ceiling decoration, the figurative elements are related to General Foods products, and the linear motifs are taken from the graphs in the General Foods Annual Report.
