Drawing, Study 2 + 142b
This is a Drawing. It was designed by John De Cesare. It is dated February 20, 1958 and we acquired it in 1982. Its medium is color pencil, graphite on cream wove paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.
This is a study for a stained glass window in which the artist's aim was to portray the unity of science and the arts. The scientific subjects, represented by the figures, are solar energy, outer space, spirit of the United States morale, electronics and the atomic age, deep sea exploration, and mechanics. The arts are represented by architecture (the framework of the picture), painting (the border of the picture), mosaic (the border), stained glass, and music. Phrases from the treble clef of the musical score of "The Star Spangled Banner," in Key of C (Study 137) are used as decorative motifs in the border and in sections of the stained glass.
