Sample, Tilt
This is a Sample. It was produced by Knoll Textiles. It is dated 1985 and we acquired it in 2011. Its medium is wool, rayon, nylon and its technique is compound weave. It is a part of the Textiles department.
Dana Romeis was a successful fiber artist with gallery representation and corporate commissions from R. J. Reynolds and Barclay American when Merle Lindby-Young, then vice president of design and product development for Knoll Textiles, invited her to design a collection for Knoll.
Romeis was initially skeptical about designing for production, but her work was well-suited to translation for Knoll because it explored the relationship between textiles and spatial constraints. Producing woven samples on her home loom, Romeis created five upholstery fabrics, all variations on the diagonal line, in jewel tones. The series included this design, Tilt, as well as Slant, Zag, Rain, and Flash. At the launch party for the line in 1985, the new fabrics were shown alongside her tapestries.
