Sample Book, Richard Turgeon Designs, Volume 2
This is a Sample book. It was designed by Richard Turgeon. It is dated 1972–73 and we acquired it in 2010. Its medium is screen printed on vinyl, foil, mylar. It is a part of the Wallcoverings department.
Richard Turgeon Designs, Volume 2, by Richard Turgeon, contains 17 designs, each shown in multiple colorways. Several of the designs are displayed with complementary papers, and each pattern has a fold-out page demonstrating the full width. Most of the designs are inspired by natural elements—flowers, shells, and animal prints—but there are also several bold geometric patterns. The work is quite representative of early 1970s styling, with the designs delicately drawn and rendered quite flat, using bold patterns and bright colors. All the designs are printed on matte or glossy vinyl, or foil.
Turgeon had been in the surface design field for many years, creating lines for Tressard Fabrics and Philip Graf, before establishing his own company in 1972. This sample book, together with Richard Turgeon Designs, Volume 1, would be the first examples of Turgeon’s work in the museum’s collection. The addition of these sample books to the existing collection will help provide a broader representation of the wallpapers available from this period.
